Guide for The State of the Union Meeting

Guide for The State of the Union Meeting

The One Conversation You Must Have Every Week for a Healthy Relationship

(Inspired by the Gottman Method)

Rodney A. Fry, MA, MDIV, MS, LPC-S, RPT-S™

Step 0 – Begin with the 6-Second Kiss

Start with a six-second kiss — long enough to be intentional, short enough to fit real life. It lowers stress hormones, increases bonding hormones (oxytocin), and communicates, “You’re my safe place.”

Then begin your check-in with open hearts.

Step 1 – Weekly Scaling Check-In (1–10 Ratings)

This step helps you take the emotional temperature of your relationship in key areas. Each of you will rate the following topics from 1 to 10:

  • 1 = “This area feels disconnected or tense” – 0 About to Divorce
  • 10 = “This area feels strong, connected, and fulfilling” 10 On the Mountain Top

Write down your number first — then take turns sharing why you chose it.

Resist defending or fixing; instead, listen to understand what your partner’s number means.

✏ Weekly Scaling Table

Relationship Area Partner A Partner B Reflection Prompt
Communication ___ ___ “How well are we listening and feeling heard?”
Emotional Connection ___ ___ “Do we feel close, supported, and understood?”
Intimacy (Non-Sexual Affection) ___ ___ “Are we connecting through touch, time, or warmth?”
Sexual Relationship ___ ___ “How satisfied are we with our physical connection?”
Finances / Shared Goals ___ ___ “Are we on the same page about spending, saving, and planning?”
Parenting / Household Teamwork ___ ___ “Are we working as partners and feeling balanced?”
Spiritual / Faith Connection ___ ___ “Are we praying, serving, or growing spiritually together?”
Friendship & Fun ___ ___ “Are we laughing and enjoying each other’s company?”
Conflict / Repair Skills ___ ___ “Do we repair quickly after disagreements?”
Life Balance / Stress Management ___ ___ “Are we managing outside stress in healthy ways?”

💬 How to Use the Ratings

  1. Identify Strengths – Circle one or two areas rated 1–10 and celebrate what’s working.
  2. Choose One Focus Area – Pick one lower-rated category to explore this week.
  3. Name a Small Step – Each partner suggests one action that could raise their number by one point.
  4. Record Progress – Keep a weekly log to notice patterns and growth.

💡 Remember: The goal isn’t to change your partner’s score — it’s to understand it.

Ask with curiosity, not correction:

“You gave us a 5 in this area — what would it take for that to feel like a 6?” You can also ask, “What made it a 5 and not a 4?” to hear what’s already working.

Listening deeply without defending or persuading builds trust and emotional safety. This conversation is about connection, not agreement.

💡 Scaling isn’t about judgment—it’s about awareness and teamwork. Your goal is movement, not perfection.

Step 2 – Share Five Appreciations Each

Take turns offering five specific things your partner did this week that you appreciated. Use the format:

“I appreciated when you ___ because it showed you’re ___.”

Focus only on gratitude — no corrections or “buts.”

Step 3 – What Went Right

Celebrate the wins in your relationship this week.

  • Did you manage stress better together?
  • Handle conflict with more grace? Keep a date night commitment?

Acknowledging what’s going well strengthens trust and motivation.

Step 4 – One Issue or Regrettable Incident

Pick one topic only. Take turns as Speaker and Listener.

Speaker – Gentle Start-Up

  • I feel… (emotion)
  • About what… (situation, not partner’s personality)
  • I need… (a positive, specific request)

Example:

“I feel overwhelmed about managing all the bills. I need us to sit down together and divide them up.”

Listener – ATTUNE

Follow Dr. Gottman’s ATTUNE model:

  • Awareness – of your partner’s emotions
  • Tolerance – two valid viewpoints can exist
  • Turning Toward – show care and curiosity Understanding – ask to learn, not to fix
  • Non-Defensive Listening – avoid rebuttals
  • Empathy – validate and reflect feelings

Helpful Phrases:

  • “What I’m hearing is…”
  • “That makes sense because…”
  • “Is there more you’d like me to understand?”

If you’re processing a regrettable incident, gently walk through:

  1. Share feelings.
  2. Own your part.
  3. Identify triggers.
  4. Recognize flooding if it happened.
  5. Share needs.
  6. Plan one small change for next time.

Step 5 – Dream Together

Healthy couples don’t just manage problems — they build shared meaning and dreams.

Use this time to dream together and revisit goals for the:

  • 6-Month Vision – What do we want to grow or change soon?
  • 1-Year Vision – Where do we hope to be as a couple by next year?
  • 3-Year Vision – What rhythms or milestones do we want to establish (home, family, career, travel, ministry, etc.)?
  • 5-Year Vision – What legacy do we want to be building together?

Discuss questions like:

  • “What do we want life to feel like six months from now?”
  • “What kind of couple do we hope to become?”
  • “What adventure or dream could we begin planning together?”
  • “How can we serve or give together in meaningful ways?”

Write one actionable next step for each time frame.

Dreaming builds shared purpose and prevents couples from becoming only crisis managers. It keeps love forward-focused.

Step 6 – What Can I Do to Help You Feel More Loved This Week?

Each partner answers:

“One thing that would help me feel more loved or connected this week is…”

Examples:

  • “Leave me a short note in my lunch bag.”
  • “Cuddle in bed Saturday morning.”
  • “Pray together before bed twice this week.”

Add them to your calendar or fridge list.

Step 7 – End with a Ritual of Connection

Finish the same way you began: with another 6-second kiss — or hold hands, or share one thing you’re grateful for in your partner.

Say something simple like,

“Thank you for showing up with me. I love doing life with you.”

This anchors the meeting in affection and teamwork — not perfection.

Counselor’s Note

The State of the Union isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence.

Each week, you build emotional muscle memory — appreciation, empathy, and shared purpose.

Over time, these small rituals create a foundation strong enough to weather any storm.

As Dr. John Gottman reminds us:

“Successful long-term relationships are created through small words, small gestures, and small acts.”

So start with six seconds — and end with gratitude.
